Crayonlegs Illustration Workshop

Students participating in the Crayonlegs illustration workshop

“On Friday 23rd January, an Illustration company called “Crayonlegs” came into our lesson and ran some activities such as illustration drawing based upon an article in a magazine. It seemed to be really difficult to produce the work as it was hard to make images which represent a selected text. They also let us use their Mac Book as a tool to create our illustrations. This included a touch board that is connected to the computer and you use a special pen to draw on the board and this is shown on the computer screen. The program used is Photoshop. I enjoyed this workshop as I have honestly learnt a lot from it.”
George Coulston, Year 11 BTEC

Mural Arrives at the Somerville Adventure Playground

After weeks of hard work from our Year 13 BTEC Art and Design students a community mural has arrived at its destination. The mural which was created for the Somerville Adventure Playground in New Cross was completed to a high standard. It is bright and cheery and will keep the kids dreaming of long, fun summer holidays during the rainy winter months. Hanneke Nicolson, Senior Play-Worker who has worked at the Playground for thirty years was ‘touched’ by the student’s work.

London Schools Filmweek Viewing of Far North

As part of London Schools Filmweek we were offered a great opportunity for Post 16 Media students to expose themselves to films that they wouldn’t normally see and introduced them to the idea of independent films. This trip coincides with A Level coursework; year 12 are to produce and independent film trailer, whilst year 13 are making a documentary. The a question and answer session after the film allowed students to gain first hand knowledge and understanding of how a film is produced by film professionals, so any students who have an interest in the working in any area of the film industry can ask questions and learn about the film industry and the process of film making.

I thought the film was a good insight into the life of an Eskimo. It was good to listen to the Q&A session at the endof the movie. It helped us learn techniques for creating great movies. The director talked about how he got the actors involved and how he got them to do the things he wanted in the film.

Rob Willden, Post 16 Student

Overall I enjoyed this film, mostly because of the exciting twist at the end. It was very unexpected and left me speechless. At first I didn’t think I would like the film as I had never heard of it, but my expectations were proved wrong. The simplicity of the film made it more authentic and it was unique, because there were few main actors or actresses and no special effects or were used.

The Q&A which followed the film viewing was very useful because I discovered the director’s thoughts on the making of the film and found out how he made it.

Cineclub

Cineclub veterans interview potential members

Cineclub is for budding film makers, it’s an opportunity for them to learn and develop key Media Skills in their lower school years and produce a short film to meet a set brief for the Cineclub (organisation). Last year some Gifted and Talented Media students were selected and made their own film. They have a criteria to meet to ensure they get their “C” certificate from Cineclub.

Cineclub Update

Interviews took place on Friday 16th January in Media Room 3 to find new members to begin the silent film project for the next two terms. Year 9 and 8 students who have been Cineclub members since it began in September 2007 interviewed and auditioned the year 7s. The interviews were filmed for the year 8 and 9 silent film documentary that will be completed over the next two terms. The role of the older members in Cineclub is to teach the new members how to make and edit film through a new film project each term. This will carry on over the coming terms with more selected year 7 students.

The World Press Photography Exhibition

Vladimir Putin, photographed by Platon

Year 12 BTEC Art and Design took a day trip in November to the World Press Photography exhibition in London.

The trip was inspiring and will help us with our BTEC Photography Units. As a student it is important to see successful artists work. It makes you see that there is a possibility that eventually your work will be admired.
The World Press Photography exhibition displays the work of Photo-Journalists from all over the world. The exhibition shows an amazing range of photography every year. All the work in the exhibition has won a recognised award.
Sarah Moss, Year 12
During my visit to the World Press Photography exhibition the image of the former Russian president Vladimir Putin, taken by the photographer Platon (shown above), caught my attention. I particularly liked the way that the lighting makes the image look really grey even though it is not. I also like the way that Putin is wearing a suit that matches the colour of his eyes as it gives the picture a good visual effect. The image makes Putin look very powerful.
